Many Paper Producers Announce Price Increases

Many of the major paper producers in North America recently announced price increases on coated, uncoated and supercalendered paper of about $30/ton effective with shipments on or after April 1st. Companies to announce so far include NewPage, Kruger, Verso, AbitibiBowater, Catalyst, Evergreen Packaging, Myllykoski, FutureMark, West Linn Paper and Irving Paper. Supply as a result of shuttered equipment is reduced, demand appears up, and the mills are grabbing this opportunity to announce new price levels. Look for the producers to attempt to raise prices throughout the year.

Very typical of the paper industry, as soon as times become better, prices hike up aggressively. Once the markets become depressed again, and they will, the price falls like a rock. This is very difficult for the printers and converters to work with our end users. Our clients are not as understanding with a yo yo price strategy.

Oh, no, not again. Our end users are having troubles absorbing the last round of increases. Continued price increases will only cause a faster exodus to the more economical electronic communication media.

Yep, looks like even Europe is announcing. I know industry needs a price increase, but we printers (and I assume converters) are having an impossible time passing the increase to our end users.
