Myllykoski Sells Paper Mill

Myllykoski has agreed to sell its Alsip Mill in Illinois to the Watermill Group. The Alsip mill will be renamed FutureMark Paper Company, claiming to be the only US facility able to produce 100% recycled coated paper for magazines and catalogs. The mill can also produce a premium #4 grade and food label product that is recycled. Total production of coated publication paper is 135,000TPA.

Any comments on the longevity of this mill? Seems to me that while the mill offering of recycled coated is wonderful (and somewhat unique) THE MILL IS VERY OLD AND MOST LIKELY NOT EFFICIENT.

The mill is old. Watch waste paper prices. That is a key variable input. They have hired some talented people to lead the customer facing efforts so I think this has some legs....not 20 years, but who looks that far out!

The facility itself may be old, but Myllykoski updated the mill with several millions $ in upgrades in 2003, including a state of the art deinking plant. Now that the mill is a standalone entity, it becomes a recycled pure play that can position itself to hit the growing sweet spot for environmentally sustainable coated paper.

I think they're one to watch.
