Much has been written about the black liquor credit many of the USA pulp and paper producers enjoyed. This tax credit allowed many of the manufacturers to report a profit in 2009, despite both depressed demand and pricing.
The top 5 that enjoyed their share of the $8Billion total paid include
International Paper $2Billion
Georgia Pacific $1.02Billion
Smurfit Stone $560Million
Domtar $495Million

What rabbit will the industry have up their sleeves for 2010? So far, looks like price increase 101 to the rescue.
The industry needed something last year for survival. The Pulp and Paper Industry, while mature, is too big for failure - if this industry fails - lots of ripple effect. Could hurt many.
