In December, paper output in the USA was 2.9Million tons, up 3.3%, yet for the year, paper output was down 13%. Coated paper improved 12.8% for the month, but was down 18.7% for the year. Uncoated mechanical grades increased 1.4% in December, but dropped 20.5% for the year. Uncoated freesheet was up 1.9% for the month and down 11.1% for the year. This is the second consecutive month of increased output vs. 2008.

Appears, between this release and your previous news releases that the paper industry is trending toward less usage for all markets. One might even be able to make the argument that fundamentally, North America will consume less paper - with or without an improved economy.
People are adjusting to using less paper and migrating to alternative devices. If the industry continues to raise prices and demand can not absorb it - the western world will seek alternative - non paper - substitutes.
